Leica’s New Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH Lens Offers Closer Focusing
Alongside the Leica M11-P camera, Leica has announced a new generation of the Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. wide-angle prime lens.
The fast prime lens has been updated for the latest image sensor technology and sports an updated minimum focusing distance. The prior version of the lens can focus as close as 27.6 inches (0.7 meters). However, the new version, which is still limited to this distance when used as a rangefinder lens, can focus as close as 15.7 inches (0.4 meters) in live view or when using the Leica Visoflex 2 viewfinder or Leica FOTOS app. Leica explains that the extended close-up range is available after the user feels “a slightly perceptible resistance” on the focus ring.
While this may not sound like a dramatic difference in close-focusing performance at first glance, after all, it is only 0.3 meters, it changes the maximum magnification ratio from 1:22 to 1:11.3, which is significant.
The new Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH also features an integrated round lens hood. Like its predecessor, the new lens features a 46mm filter thread.
The similarities do not stop there. The new version features the same number of elements (nine) organized across an identical amount of groups (six). And like its predecessor, the new lens incorporates a single aspherical lens element.
Comparing lens specifications, the only notable difference, aside from the revised focusing distance, is a slightly different entrance pupil position relative to the lens bayonet — it has changed from 12.8mm to 12.7mm.
As for other physical dimensions, the new lens is similar to the older version. The updated Summicron-M prime weighs about five grams more, presumably due to the integrated lens hood design. However, it should be noted that the prior version weighs 289g with its optional lens hood attached, while the new version, which has the built-in lens hood, weighs 275g.
The Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH lens has a 10-bladed aperture diaphragm, a click-stop aperture ring, and features Leica’s typical design language. The lens is made in Germany, as denoted by an engraved label on the barrel.
Pricing and Availability
The Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH lens is available to order through all Leica Stores and Leica authorized dealers for $5,295, a $200 increase compared to the existing version. The new lens will begin shipping on November 30.
